An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Process Control Systems Engineer to join the Process department of a customer-focused, innovative solutions-driven company which makes hot-rolled, cold-rolled and metallic-coated strip steels and provides solutions in product design, processing technologies and management of the supply chain.

As Process Control Systems Engineer, you will support and develop the Process Control Computer Systems within the manufacturing plants to enable the business to achieve its goals. The job is based within a team of Systems Engineers, each contributing their individual specialist expertise to deliver this service. This expertise may be in software development or computer systems management and be combined with an appropriate knowledge of the steel works processes and the demands of a steel works environment.

The overall purpose of the role is to provide a specialist resource as part of a cross supported team to ensure that a high quality, in-house, support and development service is available to manage, maintain, develop and integrate process control computer systems across the site.

In particular, you will use your computing skills and experience, drawing on the skills of others from the team and from external expertise as required, to provide a specialist support service for the computer based process control systems in the Works Areas.

Based on your role within the team and your areas of expertise, you will develop the process control application software and configure the computer systems management infrastructure for the plant automation and control computer systems. Typical applications include process models, product tracking, quality monitoring, data analysis, relational databases, communications links, production reports, process information displays, SCADA systems and PLC software.

At all times, you will adopt a quality approach to your work in line with department procedures, including change management, documentation, clear communications and active participation within the systems team to share and learn best practice and common standards.

Moreover, you will assist in the development of, and actively promote, the business process control standards to ensure that all computer systems integrate securely and effectively into the site computer infrastructure and to ensure long term support of software developments.

In addition, you will develop and take on the expertise and responsibility for key technologies which can be applied across the site such as software languages, software models, databases, technologies, computer management applications and SCADA systems.

When based in a particular Works Area, you will develop an appropriate understanding of the manufacturing processes and you will use this knowledge to assist in the design and specification of the developments of the Process Control Computer Systems.

You will own and manage specific computer systems within the team ensuring that the computers are managed in accordance with business standards to include risk assessments, backups, disaster recovery, access management and virus protection.

Moreover, you will participate in the specification, development, testing and commissioning of new and enhanced process control systems with in-house teams and with contractors.

Due to the nature of computer technology, to be responsible for continually updating your personal technical skills within a framework of identifying and attending formal training courses.

You will also contribute to the implementation of company Health and Safety Plans, engineering standards and a culture of continuous improvement both in personal skills and in the application of computer systems technology.

Qualified to degree level in an appropriate discipline, such as electrical / electronic / control systems / software / communications engineering, you will have proven competence in software development or computer systems management working to quality standards and within a high reliability environment.

Programming and/or computer configuration skills will be required with experience of developing on Windows or VMS operating systems. C# is the primary language for new developments and the following languages are also in use on site: C, C++, VB6, SQL & Oracle database applications, ASP dot net, Crystal Reports, HTML, XML, Java Script. The standard SCADA systems are iFIX and InTouch.

You will be able to develop specifications, manage small scale projects and solve technical problems. They will have a breadth of awareness of and a passion for the application of computing technologies.
