A Motor Design Engineer (Mechanical) is now required by our client, a successful and well-established company which designs and manufactures Power and Magnetic product solutions for the Defence and Transit markets world-wide based in Staffordshire.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Motor Design Engineer will be responsible for providing the power business with mechanical design expertise to support the design and development of specialist high power motors and generators. The successful candidate will provide expertise in the mechanical packaging of power dense motor solutions and will provide design support throughout the design lifecycle; from feasibility studies and concept designs for new products, through to detailed design and production delivery.

As Motor Design Engineer your key responsibilities will include providing the business with mechanical design expertise for high power motors rated in the range of several kW to a few MW. You will provide a focal point for all motor mechanical design activity, encompassing mechanical, structural and thermal design and analysis, within a multi-disciplined engineering environment. In this role you will generate concept design proposals and feasibility studies to support future product development programmes, as well as carry out the detailed mechanical design of motors. Furthermore, you will supervise other engineers working on motor design and product support. You will also work with production engineering to develop manufacturing technologies, process plans and quality systems and initiate and support cost improvement activities. You will develop appropriate external design, analysis and manufacturing partners in support of our ongoing business opportunities as well as contribute to the development of engineering excellence within the business.

The successful candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent in mechanical engineering. You will need experience in the mechanical design of motors and generators. Strong analytical skills and a good working knowledge of material science, as well as an enthusiastic and hands-on approach to design and development are essential for this role. You will also need design experience using 3D CAD and FEA and CFD experience would be an advantage. A working knowledge of safety and environmental legislation is essential, as are excellent communication skills (verbal, written and IT literate).
