Qualifications and/ or Skills essential
Degree or equivalent in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering, or demonstrated relevant experience. Good communication skills and understanding of the English language. Aerospace structural design process experience. Computer literate with a good working understanding of Microsoft Office package
Previous Experience essential
Considerable demonstrable related experience in an aerospace structures design role. Experience of Composites and Aerospace and lightweight engineering. Previous aerospace design experience and a working knowledge of structural analysis
Job description
To ensure that all structure specification and statement of work requirements are met for a complex spacecraft structure.
To plan all design activities to ensure that schedule and cost are met and that long lead items are ordered as required.
To have a working knowledge of all the design methods and procedures required for a complete spacecraft design.
To supervise and provide on the job training to other Structure Engineers working on the same concurrent engineering team.
To sign all engineering drawings and engineering change documentation ensuring that the structure design requirements are met.
To provide an engineering definition of spacecraft structure component design that is cost efficient and complies with all requirements. This definition will be given to Designers to produce engineering drawings.
To write structures design documentation for customer reviews and provide all subsidiary information, which demonstrates, that all requirements are met.
To present and justify the design and it’s development at customer reviews.
Designs will be taken from concept into production, therefore, design for manufacture, cost and minimum schedule are essential elements.
To work in a concurrent engineering team, reporting to the team Responsible Engineer, working with Stress, thermal, Propulsion and manufacturing engineers and having a good appreciation of their work.
Must carry out basic structure sizing calculations, produce mass calculations and exercise mass control. Carry out manufacturing dimensional tolerance studies and use a PC as a working tool.
Must have working knowledge of aerospace structures design techniques and methods and an understanding of the static and dynamic behavior of structures, an appreciation of launch vehicles and the launch environment.
